Our Teachers and Staff

The San Diego Academy of Art and Science is a middle school program of Julian Charter School.  We are a tuition-free public charter school that is dedicated to providing students with a rigorous, STEAM focused, curriculum in a supportive and engaging environment.  Our students strive to become independent, self-directed learners, preparing them for success in high school.

With less than 24 students per class, a STEAM focus, and a rigorous curriculum, JCS Academy of Art and Science is designed to engage students in learning. We provide a strong academic community where students feel welcome, safe and ready to learn everyday.

Students attend the academy 2 or 3 days per week.  This includes 2 days of core class instruction of Math, Science, Language Arts and Humanities. Credentialed teachers assign the work that needs to be completed on the student's home schools days.
The 3rd day consists of two elective classes: a visual art class that introduces foundational art practices and mixed media, and a STEAM class encouraging student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking focusing on science, technology, engineering, art and math. The last two class periods are support time with a teacher available to help with assignments, and mentoring. Students have the option to attend a half day (enrichment only) or a full day.

With the use of CANVAS, an online assignment and grading system, students and parents stay informed at all times on progress of assignments and grades.  This allows for our students to become independent and accountable learners, preparing and driving them towards success in high school.

I want students to know that each one of them is important and has something valuable to share. I see my job as helping them find ways to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings in a variety of ways – written or spoken, digitally or artistically.

When I am developing any lesson plan, I think, ‘What is amazing about this?’ Then I share that with the kids and say, ‘Look at this, look how cool this is!’

JSC Academy of Art and Science Events and Projects

San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering

This is a ten-day educational experience including interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and dynamic speakers to engage kids and families in all that encompasses STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The week kicks off with its largest event EXPO Day (March 4, 2017) at PETCO Park.

SDA-AS took part in the EXPO Day at Petco Park.  Our theme this year was Arctic Exploration.  The student create an interactive igloo with murals that showed arctic life and all the amazing science in this region of the world.

 Living History Museum

Living History Museum was a success! Students worked for a month exploring a historical figure, created related artwork, produced a video, then dressed in character to present their speeches to family and friends. We loved how our students put such great effort and creativity into this project!
